Summer Reading Project
"Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers." |

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
It is with our sincerest pleasure that we introduce the Dauphin County Technical School’s summer reading assignment. In order to provide additional opportunities for our students while aligning ourselves with the other area high schools, DCTS is requiring the completion of this assignment by September 8, 2009*. This project will not only provide the potential for students to read about a subject of their choice, it will form the bridge that links their current studies to their classes next year.
As stated in the quote above, “leaders are readers.” It is our sincerest hope that each and every student that passes through DCTS will have the skills and tools necessary to become leaders in the workplace and the community. With that in mind, we feel it is imperative that our students take advantage of every chance to better themselves. While students sometimes balk at the thought of additional reading, we encourage every opportunity for reading and analyzing that presents itself throughout the entire year. Learning is not a “9 to 5” endeavor; it is a life-long necessity that enables all people, students or parents/guardians, to be more successful and more aware of the world around them.
John F. Kennedy once said, "Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource." This is just as true now, as it was then. Our society, and its workforce, is changing at an unprecedented rate. It is through reading and education that our students will be able to maintain the level of pride and potential that exist in our society today. As such, students are expected to have this assignment ready on its due date. Like any workplace expectation, there are no exceptions, the summer reading is to be completed and ready to hand in on the date specified.
We thank you for taking the time to review this, and if you have any questions, please contact your or your student’s teacher, or one of the names at the bottom of the packet. Parents/Guardians, the teachers and staff appreciate the support you are offering to your child, and if there is anything we can do to help you, please feel free to contact us.
Sincerely,
The Language Arts Department
