Summer Reading Project
Dear DCTS Student:
Over the course of the summer DCTS students are required to choose a book to read. In addition to reading your chosen book, you will also be required to complete double-entry journals documenting your reading and application of various reading comprehension strategies. On TUESDAY, AUGUST 31, 2010 you will be required to submit all double entry journals and bring your chosen book to class. Your instructor may also require additional activities and/or projects from you. Below, you will find the criteria for choosing your book and other essential assignment information.
Choosing your book:
- 10th graders: Minimum of 200 pages
- 11th and 12th graders: Minimum of 250 pages
- You may choose fiction or nonfiction
- Your book must contain content that is school appropriate. If you wouldn’t recommend the book to your principal, teacher, or employer - the book is not appropriate.
Completing the assignment:
- You must complete a minimum of 20 entries on the attached double entry journal pages during your reading. Please see the attached handout regarding double entry journals. In addition, an example of a double entry journal, and a brief tutorial for completing one, can be accessed at the DCTS website: www.dcts.org
- You must arrive to school on TUESDAY, AUGUST 31, 2010 with your book and required double entry journal pages completed.
- Attached you will also find a handout regarding reading comprehension strategies. You should familiarize yourself with the various strategies and use them before, during, and after your reading. Sticky notes are often helpful when documenting your use of the strategies.
- Please contact Mrs. Taylor, or your English teacher, via email if you have questions. You may also contact Mrs. Taylor by telephone if necessary at 717-370-2311.
