Program Summary
This program leads to
certification by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
as a "Safety Inspection Mechanic". It contains eleven
(11) hours of classroom instruction and a one (1) hour tactile
examination. The classroom instruction is presented in two (2)
four-hour session and one (1) three-hour session. During the
last hour of the third session, the Baseline and Special
Category Examinations will be administered. These are written
examinations. You will be notified within one week as to your
scores on these examinations. If you pass both the Baseline and
the Special Category Examinations, you will be scheduled for the
Tactile (or hands-on) Examination on Saturday following the
written exam. You will be notified of the date and time for this
hands-on examination. Upon successful completion of your Tactile
Examination, your records will be forwarded to the PA Department
of Transportation along with a recommendation for certification.
The certification is issued by the PA Department of
Transportation NOT the Dauphin County Technical School. You
should receive your State Inspection Identification Card within
three (3) weeks. YOU CANNOT INSPECT VEHICLES WITHOUT THIS CARD.
The School also offers the
potential inspection mechanic an optional three-hour hands-on
clinic in the proper use of tools and equipment required to
complete an inspection.

information to the Dauphin County Technical School, Office of

- completed MV-409 (application)
- check or money order for the
required amount
- your current operator's
license to all classes
- Minimum class size - 10
applicants
- Make all checks or money
orders payable to: 'Dauphin County Technical School'
- Fees are NOT refundable once
instruction has begun
Registration
Deadlines
- Registration must be completed
no later than the Thursday before the first class night
(which is always a Monday)
- Re-takes for the Tactile
Examination must be scheduled and paid for no later than the
Tuesday preceding the exam date. You will not be scheduled
unless you have registered and paid.
- Registration for Tool Clinic
must be paid the Thursday preceding the Clinic. No refunds
for no- shows.
- At no time will the course
instructor accept money.
- Report to the East side of the
building the first night of class

Vehicle Equipment and Inspection Regulations Text with
up-to-date supplements issued by the PA Department of
Transportation. This text is required of all students attending
class and is available the first night of the course.
