New Entrants will be pre-assessed using at least one measure for placement. These assessments will be used for placement in remediation programs as a required elective for eligible students. Below is a flow chart to show the scope and sequence of math course progression.
Algebra 1 - 02052
Credit-1.0
Inclusion- 2052 I
Prerequisite: An 8th grade math course
Algebra 1 is intended for students who have successfully completed a pre-Algebra style course. The skills taught in this course include topics on linear equations, inequalities, polynomials, functions, probability and statistics.
Algebra 1 LAB - 2052A
Credit 1.0
Prerequisite - Score less than 35th percentile on AGS math level indicator and/or less than proficient on the most current available PSSA test.
Algebra 1 LAB is a support course for students who are also taking Algebra 1. Students will preview topics coming up in class, review topics in which they are weak, and will receive help on current assignments. Students will be assigned this course after testing.
Geometry - 02072
Credit-1.0
Inclusion- 2072 I
Prerequisite: Algebra 1
Geometry is a study of points, lines, planes, angles, polygons and circles with extra emphasis on triangles. The course is based in the theorems of Euclidean Geometry. Whenever possible, students will be shown where these theorems can be used in the workplace.
Geometry Plus - 02079
Credit-1.0
Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Teacher recommendation is suggested.
Geometry Plus is a geometry course that is taught to a group of students who have very strong math skills. Students in this course should have passed Algebra 1 with at least an 85%. This course also is based on the theorems of Euclidean Geometry, but will be more in-depth than Geometry.
Intermediate Algebra - 02058
Credit-1.0
Inclusion- 2058 I
Prerequisite: Algebra 1.
Intermediate Algebra is suggested for those students whose average in Algebra 1 was less than 80%. It offers a review of topics from Algebra 1 as well as an introduction to topics in Algebra 2. It is designed for students who need reinforcement of topics from Algebra 1.
Algebra 2 - 02056
Credit-1.0
Prerequisite: Algebra 1, or Intermediate Algebra and a Geometry course.
Algebra 2 is intended for students who have completed Algebra 1 or Algebra 1B with an average of at least an 80% or who have completed Intermediate Algebra. It is a continuation of the skills taught in Algebra I. Topics include quadratic expressions, radicals and complex numbers.
Advanced Algebra and Functions - 02057
Inclusion- 2057 I
Credit-1.0
Grade Placement: 10, 11, 12
Prerequisite: Algebra II
Initially, students will review Algebra 2 concepts such as working with linear functions, factoring quadratic expressions and using the quadratic formula. Students will be encouraged to use graphing calculators as a learning aid for some of the topics in this course. Students will study graphing and applications of conic sections, find roots and zeros of polynomial functions and rational polynomial expressions and will be able to calculate with and graph exponential and logarithmic functions. They will also work with matrix operations and complex numbers and additional topics related to PSSA.
Trigonometry- 02103
Credit-1.0
Grade Placement: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Advanced Algebra and Functions1 with a passing grade of 70%
Students will study the Cartesian coordinate system, measuring angles and arcs in degrees and radians, right triangle trigonometry, graphing the trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities including sum and difference, double angle, and half-angle identities, conversion techniques, trigonometric inverses, trigonometric equations, oblique triangles including the Law of Sines and Law of Cosines, and the polar coordinate system. Students will be permitted to use graphing calculators but will also be able to perform manual calculations.
High School Calculus- 02121
Credit-1.0
Grade Placement: 12
Prerequisite: Trigonometry
Students will begin the year preparing for calculus by reviewing the algebra topics needed to be successful. The course moves into the study of limits, the basics of differentiation and its applications, and the basics of integration. If time permits students will study exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions and their places in calculus, as well as Analytic Geometry.
Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry- 02106
Credit-1.0
Grade Placement: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Algebra II
Initially, students will review Algebra 2 concepts such as working with linear functions, factoring quadratic expressions and using the quadratic formula. Students will also explore conic sections, polynomial functions, and exponential rational and logarithmic functions for the first half-year. The second half-year will cover trigonometric concepts including: the Cartesian coordinate system, measuring angles in degrees and radians, right triangle trigonometry, graphing the trigonometric functions and using trigonometric identities and trigonometric inverse functions.
Financial Mathematics - 02157
Credit-1.0
Inclusion - 2157 I
Grade Placement: 12
Prerequisite: None
This is a senior only course. Financial Mathematics is offered for those seniors who would like to take a math course but are not planning post-secondary study. The course will deal with the math involved in earning and spending money. Some topics include personal banking, budgeting, financing a car, paying taxes, and making investments.
Statistics - 02201
Credit-1.0
Grade Placement: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Algebra 2
Statistics is meant for students who would like an alternative to a strict algebraic course. This course will introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data. Concepts will be tied to career and technical areas when appropriate.
Math Tutoring 11-2994B
Credit- 1.0
Grade placement - 11
Prerequisite - Score less than proficient on 4Sight.
Math tutoring 11 is for a student who shows some weakness in 11th grade math content as determined through data collection and analysis. Students will work directly with a teacher on skills in the areas of numbers and operations, measurement, geometry, algebraic concepts and, data analysis and probability. Students will also focus on important test taking strategies.
