EMISSION INSPECTOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

PROGRAM SUMMARY

This program leads to certification by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation as an "Emission Inspector". It contains 15 hours of classroom instruction which includes demonstrations on Dynanometer gas analyzing and OBD II equipment, 1 hour written examination, and ½ hour Computerized Based Test (CBT). The classroom instruction is presented in three 4 hour sessions and one 3 hour session. A written test and a CBT will be administered in the last 1 ½ hours. Test results will be forwarded to ASPIRE, Inc., contractor of PENNDOT, for grading. Notification of Pass/Fail will be mailed within 15 business days. An Inspector Certification I.D. Card will be mailed following successful completion of the course. You cannot inspect vehicles for emission testing without this card.

Your Inspector Certification will be good for 2 years. You will then need to take a Re-Certification course to maintain your certification.

REGISTRATION

Mail or bring (do not fax) the following information to Dauphin County Technical School, Office of Continuing Education, 6001 Locust Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17109.

  • Completed MV-501 (application)
  • Signature on class regulations & requirements
  • Check, money order, or credit card (Visa/MC) for the required amount
  • Please make payable to: Dauphin County Technical School

Minimum class size is 10       Maximum class size is 25
Fees are not refundable once instruction has begun.

REGISTRATION DEADLINES

  • Registration must be completed no later than the Friday before the first night of class
  • Retakes for the written and/or CBT must be paid no later than the day before the written and/or CBT is given (which is the last night of class)
  • At no time will the course instructor accept money
  • Report to the East side of the building (Auto Mechanics Shop) the first night of class.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Re-certification for Emissions Inspectors is required every 2 years. The objective of this 3-1/2 hour Emissions Inspector Re-Certification course is to update the inspector in OBDII and Visual regulations, current recording requirements, and common violations by stations and inspectors. Information will be presented on all Pennsylvania regions relative to vehicles subject to emission inspection as well as regions requiring Visual inspection for the Safety program.

Topics to be discussed will include:

  • Exemptions
  • Altered Engine Vehicles
  • Gas Cap Test Procedures
  • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)
  • Emission Sticker Procedures
  • Waiver Procedures
  • Performing Visual Inspections

The course will involve theory and demonstrations followed by a 35-question written multiple-choice test.

A8 (ENGINE REPAIR) PREP COURSE

Dauphin County Technical School is a testing site for A.S.E. DCTS will be offering a prep course for A8 (Engine Repair) before the fall 2004 testing in November. Receiving your A8 certification will allow you to get your Emission Technician certification. All applicants must be pre-registered with A.S.E. for testing prior to registering for the prep course. Registration Deadline for A.S.E. Testing is March 25, 2005. Class Schedule: April 12 & 14, 2005 Class Cost: $75.00

The Division of Continuing Education has developed several training and/or certification programs operated by the Automotive Technology Department.

Automotive Electricity * Automotive Electronics * Automotive Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling * Auto Alignment * and much more.

The DCTS Continuing Education Office and the Automotive Technology Department would like to develop other programs to meet the automotive industry's needs. Contact us if you have training needs you would like to discuss. Our facilities are also available for meetings, trade seminars and other industry-related activities. We also offer industry training to specific groups or organizations for 6 or more people.
